12 Tips on How to Make Your Home Healthier

Tips on how to make your home healthier

We spend a lot of time in our homes, right?  On average in the United States, we spend 10 hours a day at home excluding sleep.  That’s 62% of our time according to Simply Productive What is the Average Amount of Time We REALLY Spend at Home?.  So it stands to reason, we want our homes to be calm, comfortable, and healthy.

We live a lot of life in our sacred spaces.  And in a world where toxins are all too prevalent, creating a home where your nervous system can calm down and your body can reboot is absolutely vital.  I would say it’s even more necessary if we have children.  Their developing systems are incredible, and we can boost them by creating a home environment that is as low tox as possible.

I do not believe that health problems are inevitable.  I believe they are, in large part, preventable.  So today, I’m sharing a few of my favorite ways to increase the frequency of your home by making it a little healthier.  Spoiler alert: this does not have to be a complicated process.  With a few simple additions and swaps, you can upgrade your home’s ecosystem to not only look better, but also be better for your physical (and mental) health.

12 Tips to Make Your Home Healthier

My intention for sharing today is to help you quickly and easily take the necessary steps to make your home healthier in 10 steps.  Just like the environment outside of your door has a natural ecosystem, so does the inside of your home.  The water we drink matters.  The air we breathe matters.  The cleaning supplies and laundry detergents we use matter.  And since we spend something like 62% of our time or more at home, these elements can have a large effect on us.  They can either support or detract from our physical health.

What Makes A Healthy Home

what makes a healthy home

There are different schools of thought when it comes to what makes a healthy home.  According to the National Center for Healthy Housing , “A healthy home is one that is dry, clean, safe, ventilated, free of pests and contaminants, well maintained, and thermally comfortable. In addition, homes should be affordable and accessible to all people, regardless of age or ability.”  You can read the whole article here

I agree with this, and I would add that, additionally, a healthy home has clean air, high quality drinking water, non toxic cleaning supplies and detergents, and fabrics and furniture made of natural fibers and materials (because synthetic fabrics are, in general, bad for our health).  You can get more information on synthetic fibers in the Freq Show Episode 25: Is Your Clothing Toxic?.  I only scratch the surface of the importance of fabrics and how they effect our health in this episode, but it is a great primer to build on.

Not only does a healthy home look good, but it also feels good.  There is an energy about it, a flow, because a healthy home supports our well being.  This process is not at all about perfection. No one is perfect, No home is perfect. And also who has the time?!?!? But it is about doing what we can, within our means, to upgrade the frequency of our current system.

What Are The Benefits of A Healthy Home

A healthy home supports your overall and long term health.

Benefits of A Healthy Home

When we clean up our air, water, and fabrics, and we ditch the toxins (as best as we possibly can) in our surroundings, we lower the toxic load our bodies take on.  Clean water and air can even help us eliminate toxins from our body more efficiently.  This happens when our liver and kidneys can do their job (which is to detoxify the body) more readily because we aren’t constantly bombarding them with more to get rid of.  I like to think of my home as my place of detox.  I cannot control what is out there in the world. But I can, to a large extent, control what is in my home.  Needless to say, I want my home to support my detoxing process, not add to it.  Can you dig?

A healthy home provides a safe living environment for you and your family to thrive.

Tips to Make Your Home Healthier

I cannot think of better motivation for maintaining a healthy home than my family which includes my three year old son, Roman.  It’s 2025, and most of us know how important whole foods are to our health. And now I believe our culture is shifting to an understanding of how important everything that touches our bodies is to our overall health.  I don’t want to just survive my life, I want to thrive.  I want to feel good when I’m 90.  I want my husband to feel good when he’s 90.  And I want my son to have the best possible start he can have, and that begins with keeping our homes healthy.  Our living space is the backdrop to so many core memories, and when we intentionally make our living spaces healthy, we set ourselves and our precious families up to thrive.

A healthy home allows your nervous system to come back into homeostasis.

healthy home benefits

I love that the nervous system is being talked about so much more.  It affects all of our bodily systems - our digestion, our sleep, our mental health, etc. and a healthy home contributes to a healthy nervous system.  When your home is clean, and safe, and organized, and healthy, you will be able to relax in ways you didn’t know were possible.  This allows your nervous system to come back into balance, or homeostasis, so it can better support you as you go out into the world and kick ass.

How To Make A Healthy Home

  1. Invest in an air purifier

Pure air is of the utmost importance to me in my home.  I did not know this until a couple years ago, but much of the toxins our bodies come into contact with come from our air.  I don’t want to scare you, but this air pollution can cause all kinds of health issues (check out this article from the American Lung Association about air pollutants).  So, this is why I put investing in an air purifier at the top of the list.  There are many on the market, but you definitely want one that includes a HEPA filter.  HEPA stands for “high efficiency particulate air” and these filters are best at removing allergens and dust mites and mold spores and all the other kinds of crap that get into our homes that affect the air you breathe.

We all want fresh air, am I right?  I can only speak for two kinds of HEPA air purifiers personally because I have both of them in my home.  I like both of them, but I like one a little bit more for a few reasons…

JASPR

This is my top pick.  It is the most aesthetically pleasing, you only have to change the filter once per year, and it tells you exactly how many particulates it’s taking out of your air and the air quality at any given moment.  It’s also SUPER sensitive.  I have my JASPR in my living room, but if I’m cooking a steak or burning incense in my kitchen, the JASPR immediately amps up and starts getting those harmful particulates out of the air.  The only con I have for the JASPR is that it's a little pricey, though they offer payment plans and I have a discount for you, as well.  The filter replacement is also pricey but only needs to be switched out once per year.  I love that this baby is so low maintenance and effective. My JASPR code: BECKON for $200 off.

Air Doctor

air doctor hepa filter

The Air Doctor definitely does a great job of cleaning our air, but aesthetically it’s not as attractive as the JASPR and you need to change one of the filters twice per year and then the second filter once per year.  You are also supposed to clean and vacuum around the intake area like once a month.  It’s not a big deal, but it’s just one more thing to think about.  I have our Air Doctor in our bedroom as it’s smaller than the JASPR (though there are multiple size choices depending on the square footage of the area you want purified).  It’s definitely sensitive to air pollution and will amp up if my humidifier is on or if I’ve just blown out a candle or if there is something going on outside.  Air Doctor has lots of different sizes to choose from and this makes it a more economical choice.

Side note: make sure you install smoke detectors in your home.  Some detectors also test for carbon monoxide in the air and this is super important as you know carbon monoxide can be deadly.

2. Open your windows and doors as often as possible

open windows at home

We need outdoor air to come into our homes so that the air inside our homes can be circulated.  If buying an air purifier is not in the budget at the moment (totally understand and have BEEN THERE), then opening your doors and windows as often as possible is the next best thing.  Though there are air pollutants outside, there is also a lot of good stuff and opening up your home also allows some of the bad stuff you had inside to get out.  You can reference this article from the EPA for more information.  Side note: if you live near an area with high air pollution, this may not be the best option for you (think near high traffic, coal plants, processing plants, etc.)

3. Swap out your cleaning products for non toxic ones

Did you know that our skin can absorb products in as quickly as 30 seconds?  No joke.  You can google it.  So with this in mind, we need to ditch the nasty chemical cleaners.  This is a MUST and does not require a big investment.  I don’t like playing on fear, so I’m not going to go into detail here, but you can google “long term effects of cleaning products on our health” and go down the rabbit hole… Wowza and no thank you.

If you are a hippy mama and want to make your own cleaning supplies with vinegar and essential oils and baking soda, DO IT.  There are a ton of recipes for DIY cleaners on the internet.  Just make sure you are mindful of the materials you use them on.  For instance, don’t use any vinegar based products on marble or you could permanently damage it.  Some tiles are more porous than others so they require different care, etc.

If you want a quick, easy, safe, and effective swap for cleaning supplies and laundry detergent, I’m loving Branch Basics.  The founders story is incredible and the company is SO committed to only providing safe and effective products.  I also have a discount for you.  My Branch Basics code: BECKON for 15% off.

I’ve also used SuperNatural.  These cleaners smell AMAZING (hello essential oils) and the bottles are so pretty, but they are a little pricey and the stainless steel cleaner leaves a bit to be desired.

Another great multi purpose cleaner is Dr. Bronner’s castille soap (Almond is my favorite scent and I use this to make a diluted countertop spray for the marble in my kitchen and bathrooms and I use it to make a diluted solution for my tadalakt shower since it can only have Dr. Bronners).  You can find it in my Amazon Store under “Non-Toxic Home Products.”  I also have my favorite laundry detergent in there (I’ve been using it for years… literally), and two other concentrated, non-toxic cleaners that you can use in a host of different places at different dilutions (Thieves and DoTerra).

4. Invest in remineralized drinking water

We are made up of something like 70% water.  Tap water is crap because it’s filled with chlorine and fluoride and all kinds of other contaminants.  Filtered water is better, but it strips the water of essentiall minerals that our bodies need to thrive.  So, I highly recommend reverse osmosis water. That means it’s been filtered of contaminants and that it has also has been remineralized (that means minerals have been added back in that are essential to our long term health).

I spent about $400 on our reverse osmosis and remineralization system.  It’s a little tower that sits under our kitchen sink and connects to a separate little faucet next to my regular kitchen faucet.  This is the exact Frizz Life System I have - Frizzlife 500 GPD Tankless Reverse Osmosis Water System With Alkaline & Remineralization, PX500-A.  They also sell countertop and pitcher filters.  There are many great brands on the market, but I’ve had zero issues with my Frizz Life and the water tastes AMAZING.

If you want bonus points, get a water restructuring unit.  These little babies are incredible.  They spin your water and shape the molecules to mimic how water molecules are in nature.  This makes them assimilate in your body more readily.  I did a long, 2 part podcast episode about this for my old podcast, Self-Worth.  It’s episodes 92 and 93 for reference.  You can listen to them wherever you stream your favorite podcasts.

The water restructuring unit I have is from Natural Action and it is about $300.  I’ve had it for 4 years already and use it every day.  I am an affiliate for this company because I love them so much, and here is my Natural Action Code: under $1498 retail is Jaclyn-10 / Over $1498 retail Jaclyn-20

5. Invest in filtered bathing water

We are thinking about the water we drink, but what about the water we bathe in?  In Arizona, our water is bad.  It’s really hard water and it dries out your skin and hair so quickly.  Eventually, I want to get a whole house purifying system, but they are a pretty big investment, so for now, I use a shower filter from Jolie.

JOLIE

The Jolie shower filter works beautifully, is aesthetically pleasing, and still allows a good amount of water pressure.  I’ve noticed my skin is softer and my hair is MUCH healthier since buying this a few months ago. Here is a link to purchase.

CANOPY

I’ve also heard really good things about the Canopy shower and bath systems.  I love their humidifiers (I have two).  I also have a code for them: JACLYNSTEELE for 10% off.

6. Swap out your sheets for natural fibers

Our bodies do a lot of healing and rejuvenating at night.  This is why I love sleeping in and on natural fibers.  This is such an easy and quick swap to make your home and sleeping experience healthier.

So many vendors now have organic and natural fiber bedding.  Even Target has linen and organic cotton options.  Pact also has very lightweight organic cotton sheets.  My favorite bedding over the last year has been from Quince, though.  I have two sets of their linen king size sheets and love them!  They are crafted from 100% European Flax and they get softer and softer with each wash.  They also have many other organic bedding options that are priced so well.  While many of their items are produced in China, and I wish they were made in the USA, this fact also keeps the cost lower for us.  With king size sets coming in at around $200, that makes this 100% European linen choice very affordable compared to many other brands.

7. Invest in EMF protection

This may be a woo woo piece of advice, but I swear by my EMF home protection device.  For those of you that may be unfamiliar with EMF, it stands for: Electromagnetic fields.  These are produced by electrical appliances, WIFI, cell phones, power lines - even earth carries EMF’s.  However, it has been found that low frequency EMF’s like the ones that come from WIFI and cell towers and cell phones may be harmful to our health.  The WHO considers them to be potentially carcinogenic.

That’s why I love my Somavedic.  It’s a small device that cancels out bad EMF’s and makes my home safer.  It also cancels free radicals and structures water among other things (you can get further details on their website).  I got mine (the Vedic) three years ago after my son was born, and the first night I plugged it in was the first night Roman slept through the night.  Our affiliate Code is: BECKON for 15% off. https://somavedic.com/

The Somavedic devices are a bit of an investment, so if you want to start slower, I highly recommend wearables like these cuties from Conscious Copper.  We have the necklaces, bracelets, and cell phone and tablet protection devices.  I have used this for the past 3 years, as well, and love that I feel protected everywhere I go.  I highly recommend if you travel by plane, investing in these wearables.  We do have a 10% discount for you with Code: BECKON10.

8. Don’t buy chemical laden household goods

Tip number 8 requires no investment and it may actually save you money… avoid purchasing chemical laden household goods.  What do I mean by that?  Furniture, blankets, rugs, poufs, mattresses, air fresheners, dryer sheets, etc. that are made of synthetic fibers, plastics, particle boards, or that have been treated with a coating that helps block stains.  I hate to burst anyone’s bubble - mine even - but these items are toxic and they can off gas nastiness into our air and onto our skin.

If you already have these, give yourself a break.  We don’t know what we don’t know, right?  But, moving forward, we can always make more informed decisions. 🙂

Rule of thumb: always check labels and see what products are made of and what they have been treated with.  If you guys are interested in more information on home goods and what is safe and what is not, feel free to shoot me a DM @jaclynsteele on Instagram.  I’d be happy to craft some more content around this subject as it is close to my heart as an interior designer and mama.

9. Use diatomaceous earth to keep your home pest free

Pests are the worst.  The last thing you want in your home are creepy crawlies, or if you are in Arizona like me… scorpions.  YIKES!  Most people hire pest control companies, but these sprays are toxic and not safe for humans and pets.  I remember hiring a pest control company a few years ago when we saw a black widow in our backyard, and within minutes after the company left, I had a headache.  I so rarely get headaches, so I knew this was from the spray.  The bummer part of this is, that particular company was supposedly non-toxic.

Look, you have to do what you have to do.  I’m not here to judge.  I just want to encourage you to be informed AND let you know that there is a non-toxic alternative that actually works.

I’m embarrassed to tell you how I know it works, but this will absolutely prove to you that I know it works.  About 7 years ago, Sam and I discovered bed bugs in our bed room.  We were HORRIFIED.  We had just taken a trip to New York City where there was an outbreak, and also at that time, my husband was buying and renovating dilapidated homes (many of which were occupied by hoarders and people who were unable to keep a clean space).  So while we cannot be 100% certain where we got bed bugs from, our best guess was either of those options.

Initially, we tried the over the counter chemicals created for bed bugs specifically.  They did not work.  The bed bugs came right back (if you’ve ever had them, you know how horrific they are to get rid of).  Then we looked into hiring a professional service.  It was something like $5000 and that was far more than we could comfortably afford at the time.  Again, HORRIFIED and feeling helpless, I started searching for DIY ways to get rid of bed bugs and miracle of all miracles, I landed upon a substance called Diatomaceous Earth.  It’s made of fossilized algae and its powder like consistency scratches the exoskeleton of pests and essentially dehydrates them to death.  We put this powder all over our bedroom.  We rubbed it into our bed frame even… everywhere we could put this stuff, we put it.  And this was the hard part… you have to leave it for a while.  I think the first round we left for several weeks.  Then we cleaned it up, and treated it again, left that for several weeks.  Then did the same thing again… and guess what?  A $14 bag of Diatomaceous Earth got rid of the bed bugs for good.  We never saw them again AND we saved literally thousands of dollars.

You can purchase it on Amazon here.

diatomaceous earth

Diatomaceous Earth, when you buy the food grade level, is safe for humans and pets.  So safe in fact, that some people eat it to support healthy digestion, get rid of parasites, strengthen hair, skin, and nails and all kinds of other amazing things (peep this Healthline article for details).  It’s also awesome for pets.  If you have a flea infestation, you can rub it on your pet’s coat and it will kill the fleas.  You can also treat your home and yard with it.  Pretty amazing, right?  Am I blowing your mind yet?  I know it was a total lifesaver and game changer for me.

Just note: you don’t want to inhale Diatomaceous Earth or get it in your eyes.  It’s not good for your lungs when you breathe it or for your eyes because of the tiny particles.  So, when using it, maybe wear a mask/protective eyewear or handle it carefully so it doesn’t poof up and become airborne.  Same goes for animal lungs and eyes - your pet can safely eat the food grade version, but you don’t want them inhaling large amounts of it in the air.

10. Ditch synthetic fragrances - including synthetic candles

Is anyone else crying over this?  Ugh.  Or as Liz Lemon would say, “blerg.”  I am such a sensory person and I LOVE scents.  Getting rid of toxic perfumes and candles has been hard for me.  However, I find that my nose knows.  When I’m around toxic fragrances now, they actually bother me.  They smell faux and sometimes even give me a headache.

I have good news though, there are great alternatives.  If you want some lovely scents in your home, I really enjoy using diffusers with essential oils.  They humidify the air a little bit and add a clean and safe scent to your home.  I really like these cuties from Amazon.

You can also peep my Aromatherapy section in my Amazon Store for essential oils.  I’m obsessed with essential oils.  My favorite brands are DōTerra, Living Libations, Mountain Rose Herbs, and Eden Botanicals.  All of these companies are transparent about ingredients and sourcing - this is really important with essential oils.  You do not want to use anything synthetic.

Henry Rose also makes really beautiful non-toxic perfumes.  My favorite scents are Flora Carnivora and Menace.  You can click here for $10 off your purchase.  Henry Rose also sells non-toxic candles.

Primally Pure and the Skinny Confidential also sell non-toxic candles.

11. Be aware of blue light and limit exposure

Blue light is harmful to our eyes and brains.  It’s found in fluorescent lights and electronic screens.  It causes eye strain and irritation and messes with our circadian rhythm among other things.  Some experts say it is also addictive because of the biological reaction it creates in our brains.  While it’s almost impossible to avoid in our modern world, we can be mindful of it and it’s effects.  I also love blue light blocking screens.  We have them for our laptops, tablets, and cell phones.  They help immensely with eye strain.

I love the brand Ocushield.  You can purchase them on Amazon.

12. Play sacred frequencies to increase the vibration of your home

We talk about frequency A LOT in the Freq Show podcast.  Check out episode 31 on The Healing Power of Solfeggio Frequencies.  Pretty interesting and amazing stuff!  In short, our bodies are made of something like 70% water, and frequencies affect water and affect our bodies on a cellular level.  Not that I fully trust the NIH (although I think RFK JR. is cleaning it up), but this article has a lot of information about sound frequencies.

As a society, I feel like we are just tapping into the power of frequencies and my prediction is that in the near future, there will be frequencies used to actually heal the body of different diseases.  There are some case studies already showing the power of certain frequencies to shrink tumors.  Pretty amazing stuff!

So how do you play healing frequencies in your home?  Well, you can find them all over, but if you want a highly curated list, use our Freq App.  We have Calibrations that are just frequencies and we have Calibrations that are combined with powerful messages to upgrade your mindset and your life.

This concludes the 12 Tips to Make Your Home Healthier.  For any feedback, feel free to DM me on instagram @jaclynsteele or @beckonliving or email me at hello@beckonliving.com.
