What Does A Spanish Style Home Look Like?
A Spanish-style home interior is the perfect blend of rustic charm and refined elegance. It pays homage to Mediterranean architecture while incorporating natural textures and earthy tones to create a welcoming, lived-in feel.
Here are some key elements you’ll often see in Spanish-inspired interiors:
Terracotta tiles – These aren’t just flooring; they’re a whole mood. Warm, earthy, and oh-so-cozy.
Exposed wooden beams – A must for that classic traditional Spanish look. They add depth, warmth, and character to any space.
Patterned tiles – Whether it’s a bold backsplash, a stairway accent, or an entire dining room floor, Spanish interior design is known for its intricate, colorful tile work.
Wrought iron details – Chandeliers, stair railings, or even furniture accents—wrought iron is a key element of Spanish homes that adds a touch of old-world sophistication.
Warm, neutral color palette – Spanish interiors embrace warmth, with tones of cream, rust, deep blues, mustard, and terracotta.
Arched doorways and windows – Nothing says Spanish modern design quite like elegant arches that soften a space and add architectural beauty.
Handcrafted wood elements – From carved furniture to rustic ceiling details, wood elements are everywhere in Spanish-inspired homes.
I remember the first time I saw a Spanish Style home and it registered as something significant for me. It was Meryl Streep’s house in the movie “It’s Complicated.” Her home and kitchen are so inviting and stylish in the movie, but also comfortable and functional. It seemed to blend the best of both worlds. It really struck a chord for me.
Then, many years later, I wrote over and over in my manifestation journal that Sam and I owned our Spanish Style dream home. And guess what? In 2023, we bought a Spanish Style fixer upper and made it exactly what we wanted. My home leans a little more Mediterranean than classic Spanish, but so many of the primary elements of both styles blend seamlessly. I’m in LOVE. - This is also why, though I really can design any space, I have focused my design business on Spanish and Mediterranean interiors. They absolutely have my heart.
Here are some fun sketches to illustrate some of these classic Spanish Style elements:
Arched entry-way with wrought iron gate and tile roof.
Terracota tiles - you can even do hand painted ones. - They are INCREDIBLE.

How To Design Spanish Style Home Interiors
If you’re as obsessed with Spanish-style homes as I am, you’re probably wondering how to bring this magic into your own space. Well, friend, let’s dive in!
1. Start with a Warm & Earthy Color Palette
A Spanish-style home is all about warm, rich, and inviting hues. Stick to a neutral color base with shades of beige, terracotta, ochre, deep greens, and rich blues to create a cozy, timeless foundation.
✅ How to recreate it:
Paint your walls in warm neutrals or textured limewash for that classic Spanish depth.
Add deep-colored accents through furniture, textiles, and artwork.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match bold colors with neutral backgrounds!

2. Use Patterned Tiles for Instant Spanish Flair
Nothing says "Spanish interior designed to perfection" quite like patterned tiles. Whether on the kitchen backsplash, stair risers, fireplace, or floors, hand-painted tiles instantly add authenticity and visual interest.
✅ How to recreate it:
Use Talavera or Moroccan-inspired tiles in your kitchen or bathroom. (Contact me if you have trouble sourcing these… I know some GREAT places).
Add a touch of patterned tiles around your fireplace, staircases, or outdoor patio.
If committing to real tile isn’t in the cards, try stencils and paint for a budget-friendly transformation.

3. Add Wrought Iron for Character & Depth
There’s something so bold and beautiful about wrought iron details. Whether it’s in lighting fixtures, stair railings, door handles, or mirror frames, this element instantly transports your space to a Spanish villa.
✅ How to recreate it:
Swap out standard light fixtures for wrought iron chandeliers or sconces.
Incorporate ornate wrought iron stair railings or accent pieces in your decor.
Even a simple wrought iron-framed mirror can add depth and style!

4. Embrace Natural Wood & Rustic Elements
Spanish modern design is all about blending elegance with rustic charm—and wood elements play a huge role.
✅ How to recreate it:
Opt for exposed wooden beams if you have high ceilings.
Bring in handcrafted wood furniture for an old-world charm.
Even small touches like wooden trays, vases, or coffee tables can make a huge impact! I love styling with wood accents. I’ve picked up pieces thrifting and I’ve also collected some great pieces while traveling.

5. Create a Cozy & Inviting Living Room
A Spanish-style living room should feel warm, inviting, and effortlessly chic. Think big comfy sofas, layered textiles, handwoven rugs, and plenty of natural light.
✅ How to recreate it:
Use textured throw pillows and linen curtains to soften the space.
Incorporate a mix of leather, rattan, and woven textures for a relaxed yet refined feel.
Set the mood with warm, ambient lighting—think lantern-style pendants or statement chandeliers.

The moment I walked into the courtyard of Villa Secreta, I knew we had to purchase it. It had the most incredible bones, but had not been changed in almost 40 years. It was begging for someone to love it again. We walked the property with other investors and I heard them sharing their design thoughts. Many wanted to completely transform the space, take out the Roman tubs, and modernize the kitchen. My heart sank… this home was so special. It had to be loved back into life, not demolished.
I’m so glad we were able to purchase it and love it back to life. It was a lot of work, as restoring things can be a lot harder than replacing them, but it was so worth it! You can peep some of the before and afters here.
