How to Make Your Home Reflect Your Personality
Home is where we begin and end our days, where we recharge, create memories, and dream big. And yet, with the abundance of design trends, aesthetics, and influencer inspo swirling around our feeds, creating a space that actually feels like you can be a little overwhelming. Do you go modern minimalist? Boho layered? Wabi-sabi with a twist of glam? The options are endless, and honestly, decision fatigue is real.
But here's the truth: knowing what you like is the most important first step in styling your home. If you want to design a space that reflects your personality—a home that makes you exhale with relief and delight every time you walk through the door—it starts with tuning in. Today, I'm sharing a roundup of soulful, high-frequency ways to make your home feel like an extension of you. Whether you're working with a brand-new space or slowly infusing personality into a well-loved one, these tips will help you curate a home that reflects who you are and how you want to feel.
How to Make Your Home Reflect Your Personality
From our Villa Secreta Project
1. Fill Your Home with Things You Love
We’re talking soul-stirring, joy-sparking, can’t-live-without-them kind of items. These could be family heirlooms, artwork from your travels, pottery from your favorite local artist, or that vintage mirror you snagged at a flea market. When you surround yourself with items that carry stories, your space becomes a living journal—a reflection of your experiences, memories, and dreams.
One of my most prized possessions is a set of 4 sketches my grandmother made when she was a young woman. They are hand drawn pin-up style women that I framed and have hung in multiple homes now. They remind me of my beloved grandmother and bring me joy every time I look at them. It’s so special to visually see that I come from a family line that highly values creativity.
2. Include Your Favorite Colors
Color affects mood, and your favorite hues can say a lot about your vibe. Do you gravitate toward rich earthy tones, calming neutrals, or bold, expressive shades? Infuse your favorite colors through accent walls, throw pillows, bedding, and accessories. Even subtle pops of your signature color in unexpected places—like kitchen towels or light fixtures—can add warmth and identity to your space.
3. Consider Your Lifestyle
Your home should support how you live, not work against it. If you love to entertain, an open kitchen and cozy dining room might be your design priorities. If you're an introvert who craves solitude, a soft reading nook or calming bedroom retreat could take center stage. When you honor your lifestyle, your space becomes not only beautiful but also intuitive and life-giving.
I am an avid reader and book lover. I have an iPad, but nothing beats the feeling of holding a book between your hands. That said, I’ve collected a large amount of books over the years. When Sam and I bought our most recent house and renovated it, I added an almost 360 degree library. It’s my haven and it serves many purposes. It has a dining table in the center that serves as a place to have beautiful meals and a space for me to work at amongst my books and treasure items. Creating this space has filled me with inspiration and it is so practical because I continue to add books to my collection.
4. Play with Textures and Patterns
Want your space to feel layered and expressive? Texture is your best friend. Mix smooth surfaces like marble and glass with soft elements like linen, wool, and rattan. Patterns add character too. Try layering patterns in your rugs, curtains, and pillows for that effortlessly curated look. Don’t be afraid to mix and match—this is where personal style gets to shine. (Note: when mixing and matching, just try and stay within the same color palette).
5. Showcase Your Hobbies and Interests
Do you collect vinyl records, love photography, or dabble in ceramics? Let your passions be part of your decor. Frame your favorite records, hang your own art, or style your shelves with handmade pieces. These personal touches make your home feel lived in and full of you.
I use my library to showcase old records and little knick nacks I’ve collected from my travels. These items are so personal because they are curated by me and my life experience - that makes my space completely one of a kind. You can feel it. It carries my heart’s frequency. <3
6. Light It Up Intentionally
Lighting sets the mood, and it can make or break the way a space feels. Choose light fixtures that complement your aesthetic and add warmth to your rooms. Consider layered lighting: overhead lights, ambient lamps, and candles or fairy lights for an added touch of magic.
Again, referencing my library… we have a variety of lights in here to set the mood. We have can lights (which we hardly ever use, but have just in case we need bright light), a hand-made Moroccan basket light over the table set to a dimmer switch (highly recommend dimmer switches, friends), and a little crystal lamp that I purchased after the loss of my beloved dog, Pippin. I turn it on whenever I am missing her and it glows with warmth.
Pippin on her perch when we were RV living full time in 2020. I miss her every. single. day.
7. Trust Your Gut
Not every piece has to be trendy or match perfectly. If something speaks to you—a quirky vase, a bold wall color, an unconventional layout—go for it. Personal style isn’t about following rules; it’s about creating a space that reflects your personality and makes you feel comfortable. Trust your intuition.
8. Let It Evolve
Just like you, your home is allowed to grow and change. What resonates with you today might shift in a year, and that’s a beautiful thing. Stay open to change and give yourself permission to tweak, refresh, and refine over time. The best spaces are the ones that evolve as we do.
